Là single mở đầu cho một kỉ nguyên mới của Melanie Martinez mang tên "PORTALS", "Death" được viết lời bởi chính Melanie và sản xuất bởi bộ đôi quen thuộc Kinetics & OneLove. Ca khúc đã được Melanie nhá hàng trên Spotify cũng như trên các nền tảng mạng xã hội khác của mình, nhằm để đánh dấu sự trở lại của mình kể từ sau album thứ hai "K-12" và EP "After School". Vừa qua thì Melanie đã thông báo trên Instagram về việc chọn "Death" làm single đầu tiên trích từ album và ảnh bìa chính thức cho ca khúc này. Đĩa đơn chủ đạo cho album thứ ba lần này sẽ được phát hành vào ngày 17 tháng 3 năm 2023 cùng với một MV chính thức. Bài hát với chất liệu alternative pop này như một sự chuyển giao đầy mới mẻ, đánh dấu sự "hồi sinh" từ cái chết của Cry Baby. Chủ đề của bài hát xoay quanh ý tưởng cho rằng mặc dù cơ thể vật chất của một người có thể chết đi, thế nhưng tinh thần và bản chất của họ thì sẽ vẫn tiếp tục tồn tại. Đó không phải là sự kết thúc hay sự tuyệt vọng, mà là sự kiên cường và bền bỉ khi đối mặt với cái chết.

Album phòng thu thứ ba của "cô nàng mít ướt" Melanie Martinez mang tên "PORTALS" đã được ấn định sẽ phát hành chính thức vào ngày 31 tháng 3 năm 2023 sắp tới. Kèm theo đó thì một bộ phim điện ảnh tiếp theo của cô nàng cũng sẽ được ra mắt vào năm sau. Vào ngày 16 tháng 12 năm 2020, trong một cuộc phỏng vấn với Hollywood Life, Melanie tiết lộ rằng phần phim thứ hai sẽ tiếp tục phần đầu tiên đã bị bỏ dở và cô nói rằng "nó sẽ bắt đầu từ nơi nó đã dừng lại".
