THE DEATH OF A BLACK MAN
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, the 46-year-old black man, was killed at the Powderhorn in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA by Derek Chauvin, an American Police officer of the Minneapolis Police Department.
Floyd was charged with using a $20 counterfeit money bill at the store. He was a rrested, handcuffed and kept lying on the street. The police said that he resisted boarding the police car and deliberately falling. Later, after Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd'sneck, he repeatedly said "I can't breath", "Mom", "Please". However, the police remained in place. Therefore, after almost 9 minutes, Floyd was motionless a nd had no pulse. Two autopsies found Floyd's death to be a homicide. Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Floyd's death triggered demonstrations and protest around the USA against police brutality, police racism, and lack of police accountability.
Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey also said: "Being black in America should not be a death sentence. When you hear someone calling for help, you are supposed to help. This officer failed in the most basic, human sense".
