Nền nhạc pop ballad đầy trữ tình và chất chứa xúc cảm, cùng những ảnh hưởng từ âm thanh cổ điển của Hollywood và indie pop làm người nghe gợi nhớ đến các nghệ sĩ như Billie Eilish và Lana Del Rey. "Bad Thing" đi sâu vào những phức tạp và mâu thuẫn nảy sinh trong một mối quan hệ đầy độc hại. Bài hát khám phá nhận thức của nhân vật chính về sự sai lầm của mối quan hệ này, nhưng cô gái vẫn không thể nào thoát khỏi nó.
