"Much" đi với danh từ không đếm được (money, bread, water)

"Many" với danh từ đếm được (students, desks, windows)

"A lot", "lots of", "a lot of" có thể đi với cả hai loại danh từ trên.

Chú ý:

Không dùng "a lot", "lots of", "a lot of" trong câu hỏi và câu phủ định.

Chúng ta sử dụng much, many, lots, a lot of, a little và a few để nói về số lượng.

1. Much và many​

Chúng ta sử dụng much với danh từ không đếm được và many với danh từ đếm được số nhiều. Ta cũng dùng much và many với câu hỏi và câu phủ định:

I haven't got much time left.

I don't have many friends.

Is there much unemployment in that area?

How many eggs are in this cake?

Đối với câu khẳng định, đôi khi much và many được sử dụng trong các trường hợp trang trọng hơn:

There is much concern about homelessness in HCMC.

He had heard many stories about how his sister got engaged.

Trong những trường hợp ít trang trọng hơn, ta thường hay sử dụng lots of hay a lot of:

I went shopping and spent a lot of money.

Not: I went shopping and spent much money.

Chúng ta có thể sử dụng much trước các tính từ ở dạng so sánh hơn và trạng từ để so sánh:

Sometimes the prices in the local shop are much better than the supermarket's prices.

I feel much calmer now I know she's safe. (much calmer than I felt before)

2. A lot of và lots of​

Chúng ta sử dụng a lot of và lots of trong các trường hợp ít trang trọng. Lots of là ít trang trọng hơn rất nhiều. A lot of và lots of đều có thể được sử dụng với danh từ đếm được số nhiều và với danh từ không đếm được trong câu khẳng định, phủ định và câu hỏi:

We've got lots of things to do.

That's a lot of money.

Are there a lot of good players at your tennis club?

Have you eaten lots of chocolate?

Đôi khi ta không cần sử dụng danh từ sau Much, many, a lot, lots (lưu ý là lots và a lot không có of đi theo nếu không có danh từ đứng sau) khi danh từ đó không cần thiết vì đã rõ ràng.

A: Would you like some cheese?

B: Yes please but not too much. (not too much cheese)

3. A few và few​

A few và few đều được sử dụng trước danh từ, nhưng chúng không có nghĩa giống nhau. Chúng ta dùng A few (một vài) chỉ đơn giản là để thể hiện rằng bạn đang nói về một vài người hoặc sự vật.

I'm having a dinner party for a few close friends.

Here are a few ideas that might help you.

Còn khi ta sử dụng few (ít), ta đang nhấn mạnh rằng ta chỉ có một số lượng ít về người hoặc đồ vật cụ thể.

I have a few friends. (you are simply saying that you have some friends)

I have few friends. (you are saying that you do not have enough friends and are lonely)
