Thú vị với idioms và collocations trong tiếng Anh​

Trong quá trình học tiếng anh, ngoài từ vựng và ngữ pháp thì các cụm từ cố định (collocations) và thành ngữ (idioms) luôn là chủ đề được các bạn học sinh quan tâm chú ý. Một số bài mình tổng hợp những cụm từ idioms và collocations theo chủ đề dưới đây sẽ trang bị kiến thức cho các bạn muốn nâng cấp từ vựng tiếng anh của mình, đạt được điểm cao khi thi các chứng chỉ trong nước hoặc thi vào trường chuyên, thi THPTQG. Nỗ lực sẽ thành công, chúng mình cùng cố gắng nhé.

Đầu tiên bọn mình thư giãn với các idioms có ý nghĩa tương tự với từ 'relax' nha

1. Take a break: Nghỉ ngơi thư giãn

ex: You've been looking after the kids all day-go take a break for a while.

2. Put your feet up: Gác chân lên ghế và nghỉ ngơi

ex: After a long day at work, I love to come home, put my feet up, and watch some TV.

3. Take a chill pill: Thư giãn, bình tĩnh lại

ex: Take a chill pill, will you? Panicking about being late won't make me drive any faster.

4. Wind down: Kết thúc việc làm và thư giãn nghỉ ngơi

ex: We'll wind down our practice with some gentle stretches.

5. Take it easy: Nghĩ mọi chuyện thoáng đi

ex: I told John to take it easy and stop worrying about everything.

6. Let sb's hair down: Làm nhẹ đầu đi, thoải mái lên

ex: Come on, Jim, this is a party! Let your hair down and go a little wild!

1. In the pink: Sức khỏe tốt (thường đi cùng với "of health" hoặc "of condition.")

ex: It took a few weeks of bed rest, but I'm in the pink of health now.

2. With flying colors: Xuất sắc, thành công

ex: Samantha was rather nervous taking her final exam, but she passed with flying colors!

3. Black and white: Rõ ràng

ex: Love isn't always black and white, you know. You have to accept that there are many gray areas in relationships.

4. Have a yellow streak: Có tính nhát gan

ex: He knew what they were doing was wrong, but his yellow streak kept him from intervening.

5. The black sheep: Phá gia chi tử

ex: Everyone likes me because I'm so quiet and obedient. The same cannot be said for my wild cousin Nathan, who's been the black sheep since we were kids.

6. Out of the blue: Hoàn toàn bất ngờ

ex: She seemed so surprised by the news that it must have come out of the blue.

7. White as a ghost/ sheet: Trắng bệch, nhợt nhạt

ex: His face went as white as a ghost when he saw the burglar in his house.

8. Once in a blue moon: Năm thì mười họa, hiếm khi

ex: Peter only comes out for a drink once in blue moon now that he has kids.

9. Paint the town red: Ăn mừng

ex: After our exams finished, we all decided to get dressed up and paint the town red.

10. Get/give the green light: Bật đèn xanh

ex: We're just waiting to get the green light from our managers before we release the latest software update.

11. Red - letter day: Ngày đáng nhớ vì có chuyện gì tốt lành, ngày vui

ex: Today was a red-letter day in our history. It was a red-letter day for our club.

12. Catch sb red-handed: Bắt quả tang ai tại trận

ex: He was caught red-handed taking money from the till.

13. Red tape: Nạn quan liêu

ex: Our lawyer was able to cut through red tape and get us an answer from the courthouse.

14. Blue in the face: Mãi mãi, lâu đến vô vọng

ex: You can complain about it till you're blue in the face, but we're going to your grandmother's whether you like it or not

15. Lend color to st: Chứng minh cái gì

ex: We cannot do anything that will lend color to our opponents' allegations about us.

3. A splitting headache: Đầu đau như búa bổ

ex: We were up all night drinking cheap wine, and I woke up the next morning with a splitting headache.

4. Make one's blood boil: Làm ai giận sôi máu

ex: The fact that he embezzled money from the company for years just makes my blood boil.

5. Pay through the nose: Trả giá quá đắt

ex: You can get pretty good meals on airplanes these days, but you're going to pay through the nose.

6. By the skin of one's teeth: Sát sao, kè kè

ex: Oh man, my car wouldn't start this morning-I just made it here by the skin of my teeth!

7. Pull one's leg: Chọc ai

ex: I love pulling my sister's leg-it's almost too easy to annoy her.

8. Fight tooth and nail/claw: Đánh nhau dữ dội, đấu tranh kịch liệt

ex: The government has fought us tooth and nail on this issue, but we finally managed to win in court.

9. Not bat an eye: Không tỏ ra ngạc nhiên trước một điều gì đó

ex: That guy is dangerous. I heard he killed a man without batting an eye.

10. Cost an arm and a leg: Rất là đắt đỏ

ex: College tuition costs an arm and leg nowadays.

2. Get/have cold feet: Mất hết can đảm

ex: I wasn't nervous until the morning of my wedding, but everyone assured me that I just had cold feet.

3. Off one's head: Điên, loạn trí

ex: I think you're off your head for changing careers this late in life, but, hey, follow your dreams.

4. Put one's foot in it: Phạm một sai lầm gây bối rối

ex: Oh man, did I ever put my foot in it-I just congratulated Sarah's sister on being pregnant. She isn't.

5. Let sb by the nose: Dắt mũi ai

ex: You must be careful, he can let you by the nose anytime.

6. Stay/keep/be on one's toes: Cảnh giác, thận trọng

ex: With two kids under the age of five, you have to keep on your toes throughout the day!

7. Have in mind: Đang cân nhắc

ex: I have in mind to ground you for a month for disobeying me like that!

8. At heart: Về cơ bản

ex: Nicole is a kind person at heart-you just need to spend some more time with her.

9. Face the music: Chịu trận

ex: I told you not to try to sneak in, and now that you've been caught, you're just going to have to face the music.

10. Like the back of one's hand: Rõ như lòng bàn tay

ex: I know this place like the back of my hand.

11. The twinkling of an eye: Trong nháy mắt

ex: Don't worry, boss, I'll have this report typed up in the twinkling of an eye!
