    Xin chào các bạn! Mình là Chim Cánh Cụt hiện là học sinh chuyên anh tại trường ***** và sau đây mình sẽ giới thiệu với các bạn các thành ngữ hay và thường gặp trong đề thi THPT và HSG.

    Be in one 's bad/good books: Có ấn tượng xấu/ tốt với ai đó. (Ví dụ: Jane was in his boss' s good book at the first meet)

    Try in vain to V (bare) : Cố gắng làm gì nhưng kh có kết quả. (Vd: The fox try in vain to reach the bunch of grapes)

    Go to one 's head = make someone full of one' s self = make someone conceited: Làm ai đó kiêu ngạo

    On the spot = immediately : Ngay lập tức

    On the verge of = on the brink of = in the edge of: Trên bờ vực (VD: Elephants are on the verge of being extincted)

    It never rains but it pours: Họa đơn vô chí

    Be on the wagon: Kiêng rượu (VD: Unless you are on the wagon, you will die of cancer)

    Lead someone by the nose: Nắm đầu, dắt mũi ai đó (VD: He let his girlfriend easily lead him by the nose)

    At the eleventh hour: Vào phút chót (VD: The thief managed to escape at the eleventh hour)

    Sell/go like hot cakes: Bán đắt như tôm tươi

    Find fault with: Chỉ trích, kiếm chuyện, bắt lỗi (VD: He always finds fault with me at anything)

    Make believe = Put on an act : Giả vờ, giả bộ (VD: Phung makes believe as if she knew everything)

    Make good time: Di chuyển nhanh (VD: Make good time or we will be late for school)

    All at once = suddenly : Bất thình lình

    Look daggers at Somebody: Giận giữ nhìn ai đó (VD: Because i broke his glasses, he looked daggers at mẹ)

    Blow one 's trumpet: Khoác loác (VD: He is always blowing his trumpet about his treasure)

    Sleep on it: Suy nghĩ thêm về điều gì đó

    Fight tooth and claw/nail : Cấu xé nhau (VD: He and his wife are fighting tooth and nail)

    Spick and span: Ngăn nắp

    Every now and then = sometimes = on and off = once in a while = now and again = at times = from time to time = every so often: Thỉnh thoảng

    Once in a blue moon: Rất hiếm (vd: I only see her once in a blue moon)

    Few and far between:rất hiếm gắp (vd: Drought is few and far between our region)

    Part and parcel of : Integral, crucial, important (vd: Money is part and parcel of this project)

    Play tricks/jokes on : Chọc phá

    Down the drain: Đổ sông đổ biển (vd: All our efforts is now down the drain)

    Smell a rat: Hoài nghi (vd: He smells a rat when she tells him about her plan)

    The last straw: Giọt nước tràn ly

    Get the hand of ST: Nắm bắt được, sử dụng được (vd: My mom now can get the hand of her smartphone)

    Hard of hearing: Lãng tai

    Keep an eye on: Coi chừng

    Can' t take one 's eyes off ST/SB : Không thể rời mắt khỏi (vd: The first time I saw him, I couldn' t take my eyes off him)

    Shut/close your eyes: Cố tình làm ngơ (vd: You can 't just close your eyes to his violence)

    Not believe your eyes: Cực kỳ ngạc nhiên về những gì trông thấy (vd: Couldn' t believe my eyes when he proposed mariage to me)

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: Mỗi người có một quan điểm khác nhau về vẻ đẹp

    Have a bee in one 's bonnet (about ST) : Chấp nhất chuyện gì (vd: I don' t have a bee in my bonnet about his lies any more)

    Off one 's head : Điên loạn (vd: I' m off my head when i fall in love with you)

    Run an errand: Làm việc vặt

    Jump the traffic lights: Vượt đèn đỏ (vd: He was punished because he jumped the traffic lights)

    Fly off the handle : Dễ nổi giận (vd: Don 't play tricks on her because she flies off the handle)

    The apple of one' s eyes: Đồ quý giá của ai (vd: Her son is the apple of her eyes)

    Bucket down: Mưa to, mưa xối xả

    Close call = close shave = narrow escape : Thoát được nguy hiểm trong gang tất (vd: He has just closed call)

    Drop a brick: Lỡ lời

    Get butterflies in one 's stomach: Bồn chồn (vd: Everybody get butterflies in their stomach before their exams)

    Off the record: Không chính thức (vd: The new examination regulation is now off the record, it just a plan)

    One' s cup of tea: Thứ mà ta thích

    Cut it fine: Đến sát giờ

    1. Advanced in years: Già, không còn trẻ.

    He was well advanced in years before starting his new experiments.
